knitting frustration

So this little seed-stitch sweater I'm making--I got the body finished, grafted the shoulders, wound up with a little ridge on the outside of the sweater. Okay, I said, it's a design element. *lol* I was so excited about finishing the body that I decided to put on the crochet edging and little lace collar before I did the sleeves.

You're supposed to put 4 rows of single crochet all the way around the body (fronts, neck, and back), and insert 5 buttonholes on your way up the right front. You're also supposed to put 4 rows of single crochet on the pocket tops, then sew the edges of the rows to the sweater.

Which I just did.

And it looks terrible. I don't know what I did to the pocket tops when I sewed them on, but it doesn't look all nice and smooth and flat like it does in the picture. And the side with the buttonholes is now about an inch longer than the side without the button holes. I think this is because of the way the buttonholes are made--you chain 4 over 1 stitch you've marked for the placement in row 2, the 3rd row you sc 4 in the chain-4, and the 4th row, you sc in each of the 4 new scs. If I was working with wool I could probably block it out, but I'm using acrylic.

I could go ahead and sew the buttons on, but that will leave little ripples down the front edge. Or I could rip the whole thing out and try making the buttonholes with 3 or maybe 2 chain stitches over the marked stitch instead of 4.

I'm very frustrated. I'm never going to get these sweaters finished. The baby will be grown up by the time I finish them. She'll be able to give them to her daughter.
