Happy Birthday, USA!

'Kay, we're not perfect, but I think we still have a lot of potential--"from sea to shining sea."

The day was completely beautiful, very un-July-like: 70s, sun, low humidity. I had the dogs out FIVE times. Got half the ms. I'm proofing printed out (I just can't do it well on the screen--I need the paper and that red flair pen!), and reknit the cap for the pink garter stitch sweater twice. I'd go a lot faster on this if I didn't have to refigure every single thing I make. I started the seed stitch sweater, too, and had to go all the way from a size 6 (speed-knitting) to a size FOUR to get gauge, and I'm using a worsted weight yarn for which the suggested needle size is an **8** (18 st/24 rows = 4"). That must make for a really floppy fabric. Anyway, I'm aggravated again. It's not that big a deal when it's something I'm making for me, but it *is* a big deal when it's for someone else.

I made some changes in the cap--the pattern is in stocking stitch, but I wanted a cuff of garter stitch to go with the rest of the set, so I did 3" of garter stitch, then an inch of 2x2 ribbing to make it "grip" a bit, then 2 inches of stocking stitch, THEN started decreasing for the top. I hope I've got it somewhere near the right size. *sigh*

I also finished a book about Grant and Sherman and started in an edition of Grant's memoirs that includes a selection of his letters. Got a biography of Grant standing in the wings. (Monika--US Civil War generals)

Waited all day for NPR to play Sousa marches and the 1812 Overture and got modern American composers instead. It wasn't until I was in the bedroom, winding down for bed, that I got a music show producer doing what I wanted to listen to, so I had to come back into the living room to hear it loud with the bass turned up, and then it was just the 1812 Overture and Stars and Stripes Forever. Bummer. I should just get a CD of Sousa marches and have done with it. And I guess the 1812 Overture--I've got it on vinyl, but not CD. I'm dying to get one of those turntnables that you plug into your computer and record music off the vinyl onto the computer onto your MP3 player or I-Pod.

Didn't go to fireworks, but there's someone in the neighborhood who does their own little show, so it was plenty noisy. Dogs were fine--didn't hear a peep out of Timber (I *wish* he wouldn't spend so much time by himself back in the bedroom--it worries me--it's just not *normal*) and toward the end when there were lots of bangs Taenzer got excited and started barking, but since that's about 2000% better than her being scared I just patted her and told her she was a good girl.

Hope the rest of the weekend is great for you.

With Canada Day on Tuesday, we had fireworks from last Friday to Thursday night. We had to give Sam some pills on Turesday were it took hours and hours until the last one popped. He's doing better with just occacional fireworks, but still starts hyperventilating.
Biko is like Timber, she would stay alone in the basement for hours, sometimes with the TV on, or not. She enjoyes her solitude, but she's always tuned in on the sounds of what's going on upstairs, and she's here in a flash, if she heres the door opening, by which we bo outside, or the food bowl being filled etc. :o)
I'm in a knitting slumb right now. I have two baby blankets in the works, but cant' stand to knit or crochet for long on either one. I wanted to start a lace scarf with yarn I've got as a gift, but I can't decide on a pattern. So I read. But in reality I want to sleep all day, if it were possible.

It was quiet in the fireworks area here--I hear the prices went up so much that some small towns had to cancel their annual fireworks show, and I imagine that spilled over into private purchaes as well--usually we have firecrackers and things that go boom going boom all week around the 4th, but this year there was hardly anything.

Poor Sam! What do you give him?

I'm glad to hear Biko spends a lot of time by herself. Timber's the first GSD I've ever had who wasn't always in the same room with me. I was thinking maybe it was a male thing, but obviously not! I think he does spend time on the bed looking out the window as well as he can (hard to fit two crates and a double bed into my tiny bedroom--can't get the bed exactly in front of the window).

I hope everything's okay, Monika--take care of yourself. If you want to sleep all day, maybe you should for a day or two.
