downtime in T-Land

Not much going on in T-Land these days.

I continue to plug away at the gift tube socks. Thin yarn, size 0 needles, teeny-tiny stitches...

Ts are anxious to go out and play. However, although it's brightly sunny today, the current temperature (as I write) is 6 degrees, with a windchill of 13 below. This means I am not anxious to take the Ts out. It was 54 in the living room this morning. Just--brrrrrr.

I was disappointed that the CD (used) I ordered from Amazon and the Adrienne Vittadini book (on sale half price) I ordered from Patternworks didn't arrive in today's mail. I ordered them both last Friday--or maybe Saturday--anyway, plenty of time for them to have arrived. Here I am with a 3-day stay-in-the-house weekend to enjoy them, and they don't arrive. They'll probably get here Tuesday.

I was horrified to learn that Adrienne Vittadini yarns (and presumably patterns) won't be carried in the US any longer (where did I read that? I don't remember). I've never bought any of their yarns--to pricey for my pocketbook--but I LOVE their patterns. There are several in the most recent book I particularly like, so I decided to at least get the pattern book and see if I can't adapt them to more affordable yarns. I was happy to find it for $11 at Patternworks.

Timber's been an itchy, sheddy boy lately, so I decided to take them off the food-rolls I'd been buying at the grocery store and reintroduce canned green tripe and Missing Link to their dinners. That just arrived Wednesday, not long enough to have made a difference, but they're certainly happy to be eating it again. At least the green tripe. One of the reasons I started giving it to them was that Taenzer didn't like Missing Link, which I wanted her to eat. I decided to try the Tripette because it was supposed to be irresistible to doggies, very good for their coat and skin, and an aid to digestion. I'm for anything that helps their digestion (which is one reason they get Missing Link). After losing not one but two GSDs to bloat and torsion, I'm willing to do about anything that will save the Ts from the same fate. I've read that some police officers with GSDs routinely add a couple of Phazymes gelcaps to their dogs' dinner, and have been thinking of trying that.

I'm very affraid of bloat, turning stomach etc. so I'm always watching, that there's enough time between play time and dinner time.
I wanted to let you know about Biko. She had some x-rays done, she's got the best hips and knees, no hint of arthirits whatsoever. But there was something on the vertebra above the hips, where the leg nerves go down. I don't remember the medical term he used. It looks like she's got nerves pinched, but the Vet could not help at all. The Metacam doesn't work for that kind of pain. And she's not haveing symptoms she shoule have. She definately doesn't want to climb the stairs. At the vets we had to climb stairs so he could see how she's doing, but she went up and down, like a puppy, with nothing to show. Isn't it always the case? Swimming might help, so we have to wait till pool opening in April. I'm not sure about pet Chiropractor. There's no course for Vet's on the Canadian Veterianary University. It's not well thought of, even with humans. She's still runnng around outside, playing ball and everything. Sigh. It's horrible if you can't do anything to help and make her more comfortable.

Yeah, they have to wait an hour after dinner to go out, or an hour after playtime to eat dinner. And I soak their food before they get it. And cut soy out of their diet. I used to put their dishes on boxes, but now there's some question about whether that helps, so I just put the dishes on the floor now. I'm always reading about it, trying to keep up with the newest findings. I hope they'll eventually find out for sure what causes it and how to avoid it.

I'm glad to hear Biko's hips are good! That's great! But the spine worries me. Was it degenerative myelopathy? (degeneration of the myelin sheath around the nerves) or spondylosis? (where the vertebrae start building bone spurs; they can meet and fuse the vertebrae, and also pinch the nerves because the spurs narrow the openings the nerves go through)

It is awful to have something wrong with them that you can't do anything about. *sigh* {{hugs}} to you and Biko. I hope she does all right.

"spondylosis? (where the vertebrae start building bone spurs; they can meet and fuse the vertebrae, and also pinch the nerves" - that's what we saw on the x-rays. On three of the vertebrae's on her back end. It was very slight. The vet said, he's seen some dogs have it all along the spine. He gave us no idea on what we can do here. Thanks so much for giving me a name for this. Now I can research it a bit more. The Vet clearly thinks, I understand every medical term he throws at me, and I'm feeling stupid, if I have to ask again, and again. Even if English were my first language, the medical terms are still not everyday words used. :o)

Oh, and Biko eats from a bowl which is encased in a wooden thing, which has a hole cut out in the middle. She is more comfortable eating this way. Sam doesn't have the problem, he's fine with the bowl on the floor.
