journal vs. blog

Last night I was looking through a journal I kept on my laptop from November to the beginning of March, just before I started this blog. It got me thinking about the difference between a journal and a blog.

I found the journal, in some ways, more interesting. A blog is almost by definition written for an audience, so you write, as it were, with one eye on your reader. That changes the tone. Is it interesting? Is it amusing? Is it something I want other people to know about? Is it well-written?

By contrast, the journal was and is private, and that makes it more honest, at least as far as I can be honest with myself. The writing is quick, internal, a bit sketchy, intense.

Interesting contrast, I thought. And I'm thinking of starting the journal back up.
