It's alive!

But what is it?

Took the Ts out. Taenzer charged into the puppy pen after her ball. Timber galloped through the gate, made a tight U-turn, and started out again. "WAIT!" I yelled, and bless his heart, he stopped in his tracks, and I got him turned around and headed back into the puppy pen. But I was curious, and looked around and saw--this:

I'd noticed the spiderwort in the raised bed by the driveway had stopped blooming and was looking a little worse for wear, but hadn't thought too much about it since it's very invasive, and I was sort of glad to see it stop trying to mug the columbine beside it. Nevertheless....

So I took a closer look, and saw--something--in the fuzz--breathing. Quick little breaths.

It looks pretty much like rabbit fur, so I kind of expect it's a rabbit's nest with babies in it, but geez--what a terrible place for baby bunnies! It's not protected at all! If it rains tonight, as it looks like it will, the poor little critters will get soaked to the skin and get hypothermia. And it's just a sitting duck for the neighborhood cats. Not to mention that it's RIGHT BESIDE the gate to the puppy pen, which is why Timber noticed it.

I poked around--very very very gently--with a twig, so as not to get my scent all over whatever is in there, but I never did get a good look at whatever it is, because I was afraid of either hurting it or scaring it to death. I hope the mom comes back soon. Now I'll worry about it all night. I'd go put a bucket or something over it to try to offer it a little more protection, but that would probably not help at all. It's always best to just keep your grubby fingers off things and let Nature take her course.

As we were going back in, Timber alerted on something under the nearby peonies, so I imagine that's where momma bunny was hiding, waiting for us to leave. At least I hope so.

Speaking of keeping one's fingers off and letting Nature take her course: Remember I thought the 20-year-old rosebush my brother gave me had been killed in the freeze? Well--tada!

She's the first rose to bloom. Everything else has buds and will be blooming any day now, but she's the very first. Isn't she beautiful? She's supposed to be a lavender rose, but she's been pink for about the past 5 or 6 years--I forget whether that's due to weather or sun--but she's still beautiful, and smells heavenly. Someday I hope to surround her with something better than dandelions.

We had a bunny nest in one of my flower beds once. Biko found it and dug all of the babies out. They all died from the digging. Thank god my daughters friends where there. They cleaned up, I was too upset and didn't look at Biko that day.
Your pink rose looks lovely.
