Went out and cut back the roses today. Really sad, esp. the St. Swithin rose, which had gone clear up the trellis--7 feet?--and across the top, another 3 or 4 feet, and before the freeze the whole thing had leafed out--I was really looking forward to a spectacular display from it this year. Many of the canes I cut back were still alive, so I think it will come back eventually. Auguste Renoir looks iffy. Sterling Silver has a few leaves down at the very base, so I don't know whether they're coming from Sterling Silver or from the root graft. I'm pretty sure the other four are done for--but again, I won't make any decisions until this fall. I guess I'll go ahead and fertilize all of them, just in case. A real good rain right now would probably help. They're forecasting thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, but only a 40% chance.
Most of the lavender looks dead, too, though it was almost a pleasure to cut back because it smelled so good.
And some things are still looking lovely.
