Stop Foolin' Around!

A friend gave me a birdfeeder for Christmas. Last week I got a 2-armed shepherd's crook--the kind you can hang flower baskets from--and put it in the yard, right where I can see it from the couch in the living room. Yesterday I hung the bird feeder up, and this morning I've seen the same pair of cardinals alight three times on the arms of the shepherd's crook and give the feeder the once over. Okay, I get the hint! I'll get some sunflower seed to put in it!

I want to get another feeder I can put niger seed in--I know there are purple finches in the neighborhood. Has to be squirrel resistant--I am NOT feeding squirrels if I can help it!

I'm not sure the cardinals can use this feeder my friend gave me--its' the kind that has the seed tube surrounded by a kind of metal cage, so (theoretically) the squirrels can't get into it and neither can big birds. So I may have to get another feeder for the cardinals.

I'm thinking of getting another double shepherd's hook, so I can have a thistle feeder, a feeder for bigger birds like cardinals, a suet feeder, and a hummingbird feeder. I'd like to have a water-dripper, too, but I don't know how I'd power it. They make nice solar ones, but I don't have any place that gets tons of sun. I'll have to consider it a bit more.

But meanwhile, on my to-do list for today is to put sunflower seed in the birdfeeder for the cardinals.

I've only hung up one bird feeder out front. I can watch the birdies from the washroom. :o)
There are all kinds of birds coming to this one, Cardinals are among them, as are squirrels. But not as bad this last winter! The winter before there were about 10 squirrels coming to feed, and funny too, the seeds that got thrown out and landed on the porch were food for bunnies! We had the fattest squirrels last year! :o)

As I said, the birds that feed from this feeder are all different sizes.

I have a plain old birdbath and it works fine. Actually, it's a beautiful birdbath! Just not a dripper. Lots of birds come to it. Robins like it a lot, and so do the cardinals. A mourning dove was there this morning.

I put away my safflower and suet feeders in summer, but I keep my niger feeder going to attract goldfinches. To keep the sparrows out (haven't had a problem with squirrels) I cut the perches to about 1 1/4 inches long. Too small for the sparrows, but just right for finches.

I love to see those goldfinches in summer!
