Searching the Stash

I've been going through my stash trying to find a yarn I can use for a sweater for my nephew, who's a tall, sturdy 2-year-old, so I'm figuring a 3-4-year-old size.

I'm having trouble finding patterns in that size, so I'm not sure exactly how much yarn I need, or how many inches around a size 3-4 is.

I had thought I could do something from the two Debbie Bliss kids' knitting books I have (Bright Knits for Kids and Classic Knits for Kids), but it turns out that my stash is completely not up to the task.

It turns out there are a lot of dribs and drabs--3 skeins of this, 2 skeins and a bit of that. I might have 8 skeins of navy, but 3 of them are sportweight acrylic, 2 are sportweight wool, 2 are cotton dk, and 1 is fingering wool. Or I'll have 7 skeins of sportweight acrylic, but they're by 3 different companies and either the colors are the same but not matching (being from different companies) or they're different colors that don't work together.

I've got 8 colors of fingering shetland that are left-overs from someone else's project, but probably enough to make a sweater for a three-year-old--only the color I have the most of is pink (there are 2 skeins of that light pink; I only photographed 1)--not really a little boy's color.

I have 4 skeins of a dk-weight acrylic/wool blend tweed --2 different colors that go together pretty well--and I was thinking it would look great worked up with a black chenille (which I happen to have a skein of). Not quite enough for a sweater, though.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with this. It's by the Harrisville Company, 110 yards each, maybe light worsted weight (I'm guessing a US size 6 or 7 needle). It's so pretty, but 440 yards isn't much. I'd like to get a darker blue, a darker purple, and a pink, and mix it with black.

This is another pretty collection of scraps that needs another color or two to punch it up--
maybe a light green and a light blue?

I have a couple of big bags full of these odds and ends, and I suspect I'll wind up giving most of it away.

The perfect thing to use up tiny bits of yarn from your stash: amigurumi!

The Harrisville yarn if nothing else would make a nice warm shawl for cold winter nights. I've got bags full of bits and pieces as well, but I can't get myself to give it away just yet. I might need the odd thing some day ... :o)
