last day of vacation

for a while--I hope to take more later in the summer. It's a cool, drizzly day, so I may just put Persuasion in the DVD player and work on my spring lace socks.

The Mighty Gardener turns out to be a dope: what I thought was a volunteer clematis turns out to be (probably) poison ivy. I usually have violent reactions to the stuff, but this time I just brushed a leaf with a finger, then, apparently, rubbed beneath my right eye and brushed away something near the left eye. It's slightly swollen and a bit itchy--better today than yesterday. I'm thankful I didn't get too intimate with the stuff or I'm sure my eyes would be all swollen up and red. I may go out to the farm store this afternoon and get something specifically for killing poison ivy. For now I have to keep the dogs away from it.

Had a terrible shock this morning--a dear friend's husband, who just retired last week, died yesterday on the way home from a conference in Pennsylvania. I'm so angry--it seems so unfair--he'd just retired, they had all these plans--and they were such a great couple. I only know about three, or maybe four couples who seem like they have a really good relationship based on respect, equality, and real friendship, as well as love, and they were one of them. Plus her health is very poor, and I don't know how she'll cope without his help. I'm sure she will; she's a very strong, very intelligent person. But it's just so sad and so awful and so unfair. (as I'm sure the people who've lost loved ones in China and Myanmar feel). So for goodness sake hug the ones you love and tell them you love them--you just don't know how much time you have.

"Persuasion" and knitting. Sounds perfect.

(The BBC version with Ciaran Hinds?)

That's the one. Don't you love it at the end where he holds out his huge gloved hand and she puts her little tiny one into it?
