weight loss

A friend sent me this:

There's an interesting article in the New York Times about studies on weight
gain/loss. The gist is that our genetic inheritance has about 70% control
over whether we're fat or thin. They found that after overweight people
lose a lot , they exhibit the psychological and and physiological symptoms of
someone who is starved, not someone who is normal. Thin people can force
themselves to gain weight but their metabolism will rev up and they will lose it
again fast. > http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/08/health/08fat.html?em&ex=1178856000&en=271d386f02040361&ei=5087%0A>

This *is* a very interesting article, but somehow I don't find it exacty comforting... It's sort of like being diagnosed as bi-polar--it's a relief to find out it's NOT all in your head, and it IS really harder for you than for "normal" people--but it's depressing to find out that it IS as hard as you've always known it is. Some people would leap on this as a challenge, but I don't have that kind of mentality I'm afraid.

Although a good deal of how much I weigh at any given time is directly tied to how secure I feel emotionally and financially; it's happened too many times to be coincidence. These days my insecurity index is off the scale, and I'm back up to a size 20. About $30k would have me back down to a size 10--not exactly in no time, but within a year or two.
